The eastern Horn of Africa has experienced two consecutive seasons of significantly below‐average rainfall, resulting in one of the driest years since 1995. Crops have failed, substantial livestock mortality has occurred, and local cereal prices are very high.More than eleven million people in the sub‐region need humanitarian assistance and emergency levels of acute malnutrition are widespread.
Can you, your friends or church partner with Feed The Hungry UK and Pastor Javan Ommnai of Kenya Outreach Ministries, to provide emergency relief aid for the men, women & children of the Horn of Africa.
As widely publicized, the eastern Horn of Africa has experienced two consecutive seasons of significantly below‐average rainfall, resulting in one of the driest years since 1995. Failed crops, livestock mortality, high food prices combined with low wages mean that more than seven million people are now in need of humanitarian assistance.
This is the most severe food security emergency in the world today, and along with the current humanitarian response, further large‐scale emergency assistance is urgently needed in order to save lives, treat acute malnutrition, and prevent further asset losses.
Feed the Hungry operates with the mandate to feed those who are hungry by empowering the local church to partner with ministries at the heart of disaster areas and to share the hope that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
Proposed Response:
In order to assure all three mandates are fulfilled, it is proposed that Feed the Hungry work with Kenya Outreach Ministries, a branch of the Bible and Literacy League of Kenya, founded by Rev. Javan A. Ommani.
Mr. Ommani is a former member of the Kenyan Parliament and pastors a church in Kakamega with a school (350 students) and an orphanage (22 children). Mr. Ommani also has a network of churches in West Pokot and Turkana districts.
Churches affiliated with Kenya Outreach Ministries appear in blue. The red points represent the Dadaab Refugee Camp (East) and the Kakuma Refugee Camp (Northwest).
Rev. Ommani has been recommended by Solomon Mwesige, FTH Field Director in Uganda.
Kenya Outreach Ministries is located in the western Kenya (872 km/12 hours from Mombasa, ) in Kakamega. Kenya Outreach has established churches on the main highway to the north through W. Pokot and Turkana districts. The distance from Kakamega to Lodwar in Turkana is an additional 406km/12 hours by road. The churches on the route north to Turkana are the planned distribution centers (Figure1).
In as much as maize is the primary foodstuff Feed the Hungry will concentrate on supplying this basic grain.
The initial response targets Turkana District, where the situation is known to be critical and we have access to a distribution network meeting FTH criteria. The various churches will serve as distribution and ministry centers. Families in need will be identified by each local church under the supervision of staff from Kenya Outreach Ministries.
A 20’ shipping container will deliver approx 40,000 rationed meals, enough to provide 400 families with the 100 monthly rations. The cost of shipping is approx £3,000 from our warehouse in South Bend to Mombasa. Inland expense from Mombasa to the field is estimated at an additional £3,000. Broken down, £15 will provide a family of 5 a month’s supply of food rations or £3 per person for 1000 cal/day rations for a month.
Action taken so far

Wire transfer initiated today for purchase and delivery of 33 tons of maize; providing monthly ration for 3,000 people.
Distributions will start the week of August 15th.
Although physical aid is absolutely vital, we at Feed The Hungry UK also recognise and value immensely the power of prayer. It is our heart to cultivate and establish prayer partnerships with UK based churches. We will be happy to email or post you a prayer sheet.
Without the generosity of God’s Grace that flows from Heavens throne through the gateways of the resources God has so generously given to us, we would be unable to function.
Help us today to provide meals for the hungry people and the eternal hope that they’ve been waiting their whole lives to experience.
